The opening interview is so cheesy and cringeworthy that it's like a caricature of stupid statements that a pretentious liberal arts professor would say.

I know that Louk Hulsman had a very difficult childhood and adolescence, but some of the stuff he says here especially about "solidarity" or something like that are just not appropriate for a serious book about criminal justice. Though some critiques of the criminal justice system are substantiated with enpirical evidence, many controversial statements are just "begging the question" and have unsubstantiated claims. For example, Hulsman mentions how judges do not care about what the victim and thr offender were doing before the crime, but that is simply not true - I know many cases where the judges would consider the previous lives of the victim s and the offender s and their mutual relationship to a great extent.

This work is too long to be a simple article that conveys a short message in a few passages, and yet too short content-wise to be a real book that thoroughly explains a concept from various viewpoints.
