Typically you will find them in nicer live racks, but there is no reason they could not be used in the studio as well. If you are looking at the one for sale here, I certainly would not regard it in the same light that the seller does on his EBAY link.
In the end though, the Drawmer stuff is built really well, and has a good warm sound with excellent features and control. It was the compressor that Behringer sort of ripped off to make the Composer.
A very good source of mine claims right on down to the circuitry, the original Composer's copied it. I have used both. I gotta say, if you can find an Austrian made Composer, it works every bit as good. I've also used the dl and like it quite a bit i see a lot of similarities between the orriginal composer and the dl but they are a little different.
I have a Drawmer DL I only use it in my live rig solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar , but I have tried it in my studio. It's an excellent unit - in the transparent and clean camp, with a bit of warmth. Pleasing sound overall. The limiter is nice too.
Plus there manual or automatic controls, stereo linking, plus a gate. It's a better unit, sonically, plus it has more features. Plus it is a true two channel design, not a mono controlled stereo unit like the RNC. I remember when they dropped to half of that, and the audio world was screaming that the end was near!
I sorely miss the two Austrian made units I used to own and sold about 5 years ago. They were very clean compressors and did a very good job. No, they are not the kind of compressor that does really well when you slam the holy living hell out of them, but for the dB and especially in the dB gain reduction range, they do pretty good! The Drawmer might beat out the Composer. Most of my use with the Drawmer unit was live, and only a couple of hours in a studio, and never side by side with the Composer.
