Introduction: Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is the most frequent symptomatic focal epilepsy in adults. There are no prospective studies that compare the efficacy and effectiveness of carbamazepine and valproic acid in this group of patients. Objective: to compare the efficacy, effectiveness and tolerability of Carbamazepine and Valproic Acid in patients with Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Methods: We conducted a prospective, controlled and randomized study of parallel groups in patients with Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy at time of onset. The patients were followed-up for one year. Fifty six patients were recruited. Forty three patients participated in a crossover study and only thirty three concluded it.
